The best critique of Rust I have seen so far. Everyone says that rust is a lot of friction, but Jon says the friction rust brings is not because it is tied to real-life problems, but mostly because of an agenda that was set beforehand, not necessarily stemming from real-life, big programming projects. Don't forget that the context is game dev.

This is a very good talk showing how relying only on the borrow-checker will not be enough when designing systems. The context of the video is multiplayer games and memory management, but there is a great lesson to learn here: Sometimes we will seem to have solved issues by implicitly silencing the borrow-checker and not really dealing with problems. Rust compiler will cry out when there is a problem, but it is the responsibility of the programmer to go further than fixing the symptoms.

I would recommend this video to anyone who is interested in programming languages. Note that Jon gets very technical, especially about memory, so you need to know about how RAII works. He talks about the need for a new PL for games, how modern languages (of 8 years ago) are not good enough, and how a new language could be designed, going further than just syntactic sugar stuff.
I should also note that I could understand the concerns of this video after I learned Rust. That made me realize how much I learned about serious and exciting concepts about programming languages (and how computers work) while learning Rust.
