Still so haunted by *Paris, Texas* (1984). Fun that one of the best movies about America was made by a German, and one of the best books about America — *Democracy in America* — was written by a Frenchman. Outsiders can often see a place clearest.

Truly great books on this are rare, but the best ones I've read are (1) Yudkowsky's Sequences (think there's a book version) and (2) Feynman's Surely You're Joking + bits of his Physics Lectures.
