Psychologist and academic. Obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology, and a doctorate from the Harvard University Department of Social Relations. Served as the first director of the social science division of the National Science Foundation and became president of the Social Science Research Council. Joined the University of Pennsylvania faculty as the Francis Boyer Professor of Behavioral Sciences.
