Starting a live thread for my immediate reactions to Meta Connect 🤙

Excited for the announcement for the Quest Pro + all of the frontier research going on behind the scenes
There's going to be a big highlight on XR applications and productivity in today's keynote.

First of which... is music! A great use of XR. @ZachaReid has great thoughts here.

It's indoor, doesn't require movement, solitary, and augments the object itself!
"The future of VR is social"

Finally! It took a while for Oculus to come to this conclusion. There was an internal religious war between AAA 1p and social games. Despite the $$ going towards bringing AAA 1p games, the % of social timespent in VR was straight up and to the right
Interesting they chose social first - this shows it's their top priority in the year.

They could have picked from productivity, fitness, gaming, etc....
Horizons also got a large focus — highlighting better creator tools (typescript + Maya will be huge) and a move to web!

We've seen being cross-platform compatible in VR is one of the best ways to "globalize". @recroom and @AcronGame, for example, do a great job with mobile <> VR
Some new pieces of content include Iron Man VR (hand led flight works really well seen with @EchoGames)

and @AmongUsVR (certified classic, wouldn't be surprised if it cracks the top 5 in its first week)
Fitness is next up - I love the highlight of a mother!

A common VR use-case is a parent buying a headset for their kid, but the parent serendipitously adopts the device for a completely new use-case.

Fitness - for example - had one of the oldest + highest % female userbases

Will be primarily a testing device to see what new applications blossom and to bring the tech down for a consumer device

Ahh Microsoft Teams is coming! (+Microsoft 365 in the future and Microsoft to allow Meta Avatars in the future)

These cross-company alliances I think are great and quite productive.

A large need in VR productivity are good async communication methods, so Teams should be helpful
Xcloud streaming will also come in the form of their entire 2d catalog to be played in VR. Meh.

The winner would be Minecraft in VR. @satyanadella we beg - please bring Minecraft officially to the Quest! It would be the #1 app overnight.
Accenture has bought over 60k Quest headsets for productivity...

Clearly this case study is so important that they put Accenture on the same partnership pedestal as Satya + Microsoft

Spark AR is the largest AR development platform in the world, and further reinforces that VR is the best testing ground for AR/XR applications

Some progress but still TBD on whether it's the right input method or tech for AR.

AR input methods will not be keyboard/mouse. Very curious what wins here.
Codec avatars (hyper-realistic avatar) — Impressive tech! Any user can self-service about 30 seconds of capture to self-service create a lower fidelity version

People will try on avatars like clothes, this will be one style!
Mark subtweeting Apple in his closing remarks.

There are open (Meta) and closed (Apple) ecosystems The platform holder wins in closed ecosystems. The populace wins in open ones.

It's unclear what will win in ARVR, but Meta will work for the open. (aligned w/ Epic & Microsoft)
