Ryan Attwood was a gifted but troubled teen from Chino California.

Abused by his biological father and his mother's steady stream of boyfriends, he had a tough childhood. He developed a love-hate relationship with his moth Dawn and brother Trey.

Left to fend for themselves, Ryan and Trey get caught in some bad business.

After getting caught attempting to steal a car, they are kicked out of the house with no where to go.

The only person who'd take Ryan in?

His public defender lawyer: Sandy Cohen.

Sandy was a blue-collar public defender - but his wife, Kirsten, came from money. Her father was one of the largest real estate developers in Newport Beach.

Sandy & Kirsten embraced the Newport life and decided to raise their only son, Seth, in the culture.

Newport Beach, California. Oh baby.

Big houses. Fast cars. Tan Bodies. And Loose Rules.

It is the heart of California's Orange County.

But Seth wasn't your typical "Newpie" - he loved comic books, science fiction, and video games.

The cool kids of Newport, the water polo players, bullied Seth.

So while Seth came from one of Newport's top families, he never quite fit in.

So here we are: Ryan Attwood moves in with the Cohen family in their Newport Beach mansion pool house.

Initially Kirsten is wary, but when she learns of Ryan's troubled past and sees how her outcast son takes to Ryan, she decides to take him in.

You see: Ryan and Seth are both outcasts.

Ryan is brutish, quick tempered, and working class.

Seth is nerdy, awkward, and unpopular.

But in Newport Beach -- they are both outcasts. And that bonds them, like brothers.

But Seth isn't Ryan's only friend...

Upon moving in with the Cohen's, Ryan meets their neighbor: Marissa Cooper...Marissa is a Newpie and dates the top Newpie -but Ryan can instantly tell they share a bond.

You see, while Marissa's life may seem "perfect" - she actually shares some of Ryan's troubles. Her parents are divorced, her dad is a disgrace, and her mom obviously re-married for money (to Kirsten's dad btw).

Ryan and Marissa are different, but the same. There is a spark.

But Marissa's water-polo playing BF, Luke catches on to it quickly. And soon, different types sparks are ignited.

When Luke confronts Ryan, their fight ends up with a model home going up in flames!
