"One good way to start talking about Fascism is that Mussolini had been a journalist and was very good with pithy slogans and turns of phrase. He called Fascism a revolution of reaction... it was billed as a return to order. The very first victims of fascism was the [political] left... Fascism is a hyper-nationalist and imperialist movement.
[Fascism] uses rhetoric of victimhood; both the leader as a victim and the nation which is victimized by an unfair international state system... victimhood is very very important to fascism.
The Revolution of Reaction is this kind of total upheaval, where lawlessness and violence become institutionalized."

"One thing that is absolutely integral to fascism is the leader cult. The leader cult unifies all of these tools of rule. He is the man that can get away with what other men cannot. He's lawless and part of the appeal of authoritarianism is that you get away with it.
These personality canons have not changed in 100 years. He's a man of the people. He's also a man above all other men. And you see religious institutions up through Trump, where evangelicals and also orthodox Jews said that Trump was there by the will of God. And these are things that recur."
