“When someone’s strong belief systems gets disconfirmed and they see evidence for disconfirmation they go into cognitive dissonance. In general when people suffer cognitive dissonance, meaning they get confused about what is real or not, they tend to retreat back to the belief system and begin to rationalize it.
You can see this happening with the assault on Congress with many of the people. Rather than admit their mistake, they double down and reinforce what they did as if it was the right thing to do. This is normal human behavior to reinforce your own beliefs when there is disconfirming evidence. But some people start to see something is wrong because they see conflicts [contradictions] within the movements.” - Joe Szimhart
