Purchase options and add-ons
Have you ever heard a news reporter say "the Dow rose 300 points today" and had no clue what they meant? If the answer is yes, you're not alone! Most people are taught nothing about investing or the stock market while they are in school. In Why Does The Stock Market Go Up?, Brian Feroldi demystifies the stock market by explaining what it is and how it works using easy-to-understand terms and simple examples. This book was designed to arm ordinary people with the knowledge that they need to build extraordinary wealth.
Why Does The Stock Market Go Up? is the easy-to-digest book that everyone needs to read. Feroldi breaks down the basic investing concepts so that anyone can understand and take action. The financial services industry has spent decades telling average Joes and Janes that they can't possibly understand the stock market. Feroldi proves them wrong with his easy-to-understand examples and explanations. You too can understand why the stock market goes up, or down, and how it impacts your financial future. Never before has investing in stocks or bonds seemed so straightforward.

"Brian has written a book you can hand to anyone and know that they'll become smarter, happier, and richer for it. Required reading for those seeking lifelong profit from lifelong investment." - Tom Gardner, Co-Founder & CEO of the Motley Fool
"You can't make great decisions without great information. This is especially true of decisions about something as complex as the stock market. Brian Feroldi delivers a breezy read that deftly unpacks the market. Every page is packed with the information you need to understand how to take advantage of the greatest wealth creation machine of all-time." - Annie Duke, Author of Thinking in Bets & How to Decide
"If you want to understand investing in stocks and the stock market, Brian Feroldi clearly explains both in his brilliant new book. And you should want to. The stock market is the single most powerful wealth-building tool yet invented. But if you don't understand it, it will leave you bleeding by the side of the road." - JL Collins, Author of The Simple Path to Wealth.
This is perhaps the most clear, easy-to-read explanation of stocks and the stock market that I've come across. If you find stock market jargon confusing or if you worry that stock investing is too technical, start demystifying the process by reading this book. Brian Feroldi uses the example of a hypothetical coffee company to explain, in easy-to-grasp terms, the fundamentals of company valuations, stocks, returns and the overall market. His book is filled with simple, clear explanations that any stock investor should learn. It's simple without being simplistic, and it educates and entertains without any fluff. - Paula Pant, host of the Afford Anything podcast and founder of AffordAnything.com
Brian Feroldi has a silver tongue and a heart of gold. He has the gift to be able to speak to us all, at whatever age, about investing. Investing in its truest sense. I hope a lot of people read this book. - David Gardner, Co-Founder of the Motley Fool

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2022I’ve been investing for about a year, so I’m still extremely new to investing. Brian Feroldi starts this book by saying that he wrote the book he wish he had when he was trying to learn how to invest, and he nailed it. Whether you’re just getting started, or about to get started, this short book provides a ton of value. I do think it’s also a great refresher book for any experienced investor to remember some fundamental aspects of markets and the stock markets work.
The book starts with giving a brief history of the stock market, and I actually finally learned what the hell the NASDAQ and Dow Jones are thanks to Feroldi. From there, Feroldi uses a fictitious coffee startup to explain how businesses start, why they go public, and all of the other aspects of what makes their share prices go up and down. This paints an easy-to-understand picture for the reader, and he provides a ton of visuals in the book. And after laying the foundation for all of this, he answers a bunch of questions new investors ask like when you should sell a stock, if a financial advisor is a good idea, how diversified you should be and more.
Awesome book, and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2022Would definitely recommend to anyone getting started on their investing journey or in need of a refresher, and I can see it being a great educational tool to hand to someone who is questioning whether investing is the right choice for them.
I really enjoyed the book as it kept concepts simple and condensed so that it was easy to read and finish entire concepts quickly. With kids in the house, long chapter books have fallen by the wayside long ago as I simply don't have time to digest them, but this was easy to read a quick chapter or two before bed or sneak one into some free moments of downtime. The content itself was on point, helping me understand how various macro and micro level decisions and events affect the stock market and individual companies.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2022I went to college and studied Finance & Accounting but still never quite grasped the practical nature of a lot of business concepts. Brian's book is exceptionally good at providing simple and clarifying answers to difficult to answer questions. I highly recommend this book to both business students and really anybody who wants to have a better idea of what dictates the world around them. Another major perk of the book is that the chapters are short which makes breaking up the reading really easy. I have been waiting so long for a book like this. I even gifted a copy to a friend who was interested in investing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2023Great book whether you are a beginner in the stock market, or have been investing for a long time. I consider myself a knowledgeable investor, having invested in the stock market for many years and managing my own portfolio. Even with my experience, this book helped strengthen my knowledge around various investing methods and tricks. I was able to fill in some of the gaps in my investing skills. I will use some of the new things I learned to continue to grow my net worth!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2022Very accessible book. I listen to a lot of personal finance podcasts but I learned a lot from this one! It feels appropriate for anyone high school aged and up. The writing is very clear and doesn't assume much about your financial situation, though it is US-centric.
It has helpful examples using both a fictional and real companies, but isn't bloated with too many examples and case studies.
It's a short book but I found it well worth the money, and recommend it to friends and family.
My only complaint is that there are some chapters that are repetitive: they talk about how a concept works for a single stock, then there's another chapter explaining how it applies to the market overall. I think these don't need a whole chapter every time - this could have just been a paragraph in the previous chapters saying "this also applies to the whole market, and here's how". But this isn't enough to bring it down from 5 stars for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022If you don’t even know what the stock market is then this would be a great book. If you’ve been investing for 6+ months you probably already know 95% of the information in the book. Glad I read it though!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025If this was a book about fishing, you will have learned about the depth of the waters before you, the types of catch inside it, the weather to look out for way out at the horizon and how to stomach the waves. So when you're ready, fear not to start putting up your sails!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2023This book was an easy read - yet packed with tons of info. This is a great dive into the stock market for those who want to know more about how the stock market operates from the investor side and business owner side. This is info anyone should know and great for anyone high school age and above.
